Wake Forest University is a private, coeducational university, which has the main campus located in Winston-Salem, the county seat and largest city of Forsyth County, situated in the US state of North Carolina, as well as the 4th largest city in the state, having a population estimated at a number of nearly 186 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census.
Wake Forest University was founded in 1834, as the Wake Forest Manual Labor Institute, and it got its name from its original location, in Wake Forest, north of Raleigh, NC, being moved to its present location, in 1956. The institution was closed during the American Civil War, but it was re-opened in 1866, and since then it continuously prospered, being known today as one of the state’s finest universities.
Wake Forest University has been highly ranked by various significant publications, over the years, including in U.S. News America’s Best Colleges report, in which the university was placed on the 28th place overall among national universities, also being ranked 11th overall in terms of Best Undergraduate Teaching among national universities, in the same report.
Wake Forest’s athletic teams are known as the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, formerly known as the Fighting Baptists, who compete in the NCAA’s Division I (in the Bowl Subdivision for football) and in the Atlantic Coast Conference, in various sports, in most of which they’ve experienced victory, many times in the past years, having won a total 8 national championships in four different sports, 4 of which have been in the past 6 years.
